Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has signed an agreement with French engine manufacturer, Turbomeca, to support the Shakti helicopter engine. The Shakti engine is likely to power over 1,000 Indian military choppers over the next years. Its technical know-how will help to provide maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) support for the Shakti engine, as well as for the Dhruv ALH. Indian Air Force (IAF) has committed to buying 65 LCH, while the army wants 114, adding up to an initial commitment of 179 LCHs. Priced at about Rs 440 million, the Dhruv is well priced against western helicopters. Further with local MRO, the maintenance cost goes further down.
