Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) has approved clearance for cultivation of genetically modified mustard seeds. It may be noted, Supreme Court of India has earlier issued a stay on the release of GM Mustard seed. The commercial cultivation of genetic modification of mustard seeds suitable to India will enable India to meet its target of 15 million tonnes of mustard seed production by 2025. The edible oil industry has welcomed the move, which is facing a shortage of quality edible oil seeds.
Edible oil production in India is estimated at 7.28 million tonnes for the oil year 2016-17 against the production of 5.8 million tonnes in 2015-2016. The increase in oilseeds output is attributed to the higher yield of 936 kg per hectare as against 680 kg/ha and the increased acreage of crops from 185.19 lakh hectares to 190.31 lakh hectares. However, India has to go a long way to avoid imports which is currently estimated to reach 14.5 million tonnes in 2016-17. By 2025, India may consume 30-34 million tonnes of edible oil. With bumper crop of sunflower seeds in Europe and particularly in Ukraine, sunflower oil is cheaper compared to soya bean oil. In India rice bran oil production is reaching more households and is posting growth from 950,000 tonnes to 980,000 tonnes.
India produces 17.5 million tonne of vegetable oil. There is huge shortfall of edible oil, where India imports around 11 million tonne, which accounts for 60 per cent sourcing of edible oils from global markets to meet the domestic consumption needs. In this, palm oil constitutes the largest share of imports and Canola?s share is a miniscule 2 per cent. However, refined oils have an import duty of 20% while canola oil is around 12% which provides a better growth prospects for canola oil.
Canola oil is healthy and it needs a conversion of Indian consumers to switch from traditional oils to Canola. The high smoke point of Canola at 240 degree centigrade is a big benefit in the Indian kitchens. This heat tolerance of Canola oil is the highest among all commonly used cooking oils in India. B
