Common Engineering Facilities Centre ( CEFC) would be set up in Pune at a cost Rs 519.2 million for tools, moulds and dies industry by Department of Heavy Industry. The objective of this project is to upgrade existing tooling industry in and around Pune and it will service the small and medium units like tool trial, validation, calibration set up, high end manufacturing facilities. The centre would also run short term training courses with emphasis on practical training. Further it said as part of the roadmap for revival or closure of CPSEs, the ministries and departments will have to analyse the performance of its CPSEs to classify them as sick or weak within six months of the closure of the financial year.

With emphasis on 'Make in India' and manufacturing growth, where machine tools sector serves as the mother industry is set to get a boost.
The Indian Machine tool Industry has around 1000 units in the production of machine tools, accessories/attachments, subsystems and parts. A majority of machine tools are in the SME sector which caters to the demand of ancillary units while larger players cater to heavy engineering units. India imports around Rs. 2000 crores of machine tools while exporting Rs. 281 crores in the financial year 2014.
